The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance files tax warrants with the New York State Department of State pursuant to section 6 of the Tax Law. The Department of State maintains an electronic database of the tax warrant-related notices filed by the Department of Taxation and Finance. These notices may be searched by taxpayer name, city, county, or any combination of the foregoing.

On or after July 1, 2025, all warrants are filed with the Department of State and the search displays the information constituting the official warrant. For records displayed with an effective date prior to July 1, 2025, official warrants should be obtained from the respective county clerk where filed.

Please note that amounts due under a NYS tax warrant change as taxpayers make payments and/or interest accrues. For more current information about the current balance due on a NYS tax warrant, visit [New York State Tax Warrants search (the Department of Taxation and Finance)](Opens new window)

Below are descriptions, information, and some examples on how to use this system so you can retrieve information from the tax warrant database.

Important Note: The examples in this section do not necessarily return any results or matches.

Search By Name

In the name (field) you would enter the name of the business or individual(s) that you would want to search for. This field is not case sensitive and the name can be entered in upper, lower or mixed case. The name entered should be the legal name of the business entity or person (entering a "doing business as" or "also known as" name will not necessarily return any warrants filed against the business or person under the legal name).

To search for warrants filed against a business operating as a sole proprietorship, you should enter the legal name of the proprietor.

Based on the Search Type selected (see below) the name may be entered in various ways. In general, entering a larger portion of the name will result in fewer names being listed. The minimum number of characters that must be entered is 3.

Search Types

You must select one of the following search types:

Begins With:

This type of search requires the exact beginning part or entire name to be entered.

Examples for "Jim Smith Chevrolet, Inc.":

  • Jim SMITH CheV
  • JIM Smith Chevrolet
  • Jim Smith Chevrolet, Inc.

Examples for "Jacqueline J" and "James Q Jones":

  • Jacqueline J
  • Jacqueline J and James Q
  • Jacqueline J and James Q Jones

With this search type, a more specific input will yield fewer results. Each word or part entered must have a minimum of three characters.

Base Word:

This search requires you to know at least one word that is part of the warranted party's name.

When entering multiple words, their order does not matter.

Examples for "Xanadu Recycling Science":

  • Xanadu
  • Xanadu Science
  • Science Recycling

Buttons

Three buttons are available throughout the system:
